Count the parts by name: 1 fourth, 2 fourths, 3 fourths, 4 fourths make a whole, then 5 fourths is 1 whole and 1 fourth more.

Watch for: Counting parts that aren't equal as fourths. Thinking an eighth is bigger than a fourth because 8 is bigger than 4. Stopping at 1 whole when parts carry on into the next.
At home: Cut a tortilla or sandwich into halves, then fourths, then eighths. Ask which pieces are biggest and how many make the whole.
