Writing one fraction three ways: as a number (3/4), in number-words (3 fourths) and in words (three-fourths). Your child reads each form and writes the others.
The top number says how many parts; the bottom names the size of the parts. 5/8 is 5 eighths, or five-eighths. Going back, the count goes on top.

Watch for: Making up part names: 1/2 is one-half and 3/4 is three-fourths, not one-twoth or three-fours. Swapping top and bottom, writing 2 thirds as 3/2. Naming the unshaded parts of a picture instead of the shaded ones.
At home: Cut a sandwich or tortilla into equal parts and name what's eaten three ways: 3/4, 3 fourths, three-fourths. Write one and have your child write the others.
