The whole grid is 1. A full column is one tenth (0.1); one square is a hundredth (0.01). Count the columns, then the extra squares: 3 columns and 7 squares is 0.37.
Watch for: Reading 0.4 as less than 0.37 because 4 is less than 37. Counting columns as hundredths. Writing 0.7 for 7 squares instead of 0.07.
At home: Shade a 10 × 10 grid for prices: 37 cents is 0.37 of a dollar.
