Start inside the parentheses, then work the brackets around them. With no groups left, multiply and divide from left to right, then add and subtract.

Watch for: Dropping the parentheses and working left to right: 3 × (4 + 5) is 27, not 17. Starting on the brackets before finishing the parentheses inside them. Forgetting the part outside the parentheses, like the − 4 in (7 + 2) × 3 − 4.
At home: Write an expression like 2 × (3 + 4) and have your child say the steps aloud before working it out. Then take the parentheses away and compare.
