Percent means out of 100: 35 shaded squares out of 100 is 35%, which is 35/100. Divide top and bottom by the same number for lowest terms: 25/100 = 1/4.
Watch for: Counting columns as 1 each instead of 10. Writing 4% for 40% when four whole columns are shaded. Dividing only the top of the fraction when simplifying.
At home: Look for percents on labels and signs (50% off, 100% juice) and ask what each means out of 100.
