Earning money

How people earn money by doing work, telling money that was earned from a gift, and counting the coins someone earned.

Make a sheetDownload PDFThe PDF has this sheet, its answer key and a guide for grown-ups.

How to help

Ask: did they do a job for it? Money paid for work is earned. Money given for a birthday, or for no job at all, is a gift.

Watch for: Calling money given as a present “earned”. Saying any activity earns money, even one nobody pays for. Counting a dime as 1¢ because it's the smallest coin.

At home: Talk about the jobs of people you know and what they do. A small paid chore, like matching socks, shows what earning means.
