Use facts you know: doubles (4 + 4), one more (4 + 5), and pairs that make 10 (7 + 3). For take away, think of the adding fact: 9 − 4 is 5 because 4 + 5 = 9.

Watch for: Counting all from 1 instead of counting on from the bigger number. Adding when the sign says take away. Mixing up 6 + 4 and 6 + 3 on make-10 facts.
At home: Play make-10 with a deck of cards (ace to 9): turn one card and say the number that makes 10.
