Naming coins and bills and knowing what each is worth: a penny is 1¢, a nickel 5¢, a dime 10¢ and a quarter 25¢. Your child also trades one for smaller ones.
Know each value first. To find how many small ones make a big one, count up by the small one's value: a dime is 5, 10, so 2 nickels.

Watch for: Thinking a nickel is worth more than a dime because it's bigger. Counting coins instead of their value: 3 dimes beats 2 quarters. Mixing up the $5 and $10 bills, or the penny and the nickel.
At home: Empty a coin jar and sort the coins by kind. Ask your child to name each pile and trade, like 5 pennies for a nickel.
