The short hand shows the hour. If the long hand points to 12, it is o'clock (6:00). If it points to 6, it is half past (6:30), and the short hand sits halfway past the hour.
Watch for: Mixing up the hands and reading the long hand as the hour. At half past, reading the next hour: 3:30 as 4:30. Writing 6:0 or 6:3 instead of 6:00 or 6:30.
At home: Ask your child to read a clock with hands at o'clock and half past through the day: at breakfast, and at the start of bath time.
