Count how many are in one row. Every row has the same number, so add that number once for each row: 3 rows of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
Watch for: Adding the number of rows and the number in each row (3 + 4). Writing too many or too few addends for the rows. Mixing up rows and columns in the addition.
At home: Look for arrays at home: egg cartons, muffin tins, window panes. Ask how many in a row, how many rows and how many in all.
