Check the parts are equal and count them. One part is 1 over that number: 3 equal parts make thirds, and one part is 1/3.
Watch for: Calling parts that aren't equal thirds or fourths. Putting the number of shaded parts on the bottom. Thinking a bigger bottom number means a bigger piece.
At home: Fold paper into halves, then fourths, and name each part as you unfold it.
