Count everything in the set: that's the bottom number. Count the ones asked about: that's the top number. 1 circled out of 4 stars is 1/4.
Watch for: Putting the circled over the uncircled: 1 of 4 circled is 1/4, not 1/3. Counting only one kind for the bottom number when the set has two kinds. For “circle 4/6”, circling 6 things instead of 4 out of the 6.
At home: Put out a handful of socks, spoons or crayons. Ask what fraction are blue, then what fraction are not, and notice together they make the whole set.
