Read each digit by its place. In 4306 the 4 is 4 thousands, the 3 is 3 hundreds, the 0 means no tens and the 6 is 6 ones: 4000 + 300 + 6.

Watch for: Writing “four thousand six” as 406 instead of 4006: a zero holds each empty place. Writing the 2 in 1027 as 2 in expanded form: it's worth 20. Comparing by the last digits instead of starting with the thousands.
At home: Read four-digit numbers you see out loud: a year, a car's miles, a high score. Ask what each digit is worth, then which of two numbers is bigger.
