For a distance straight up or across, subtract the numbers that change: (10, 1) to (10, 5) is 5 − 1 = 4 units. To plot (8, 9), start at 0, go 8 across, then 9 up.
Watch for: Going up first, so (4, 0) lands at (0, 4). Counting from 1 instead of from 0. Counting grid lines instead of spaces: (10, 1) to (10, 5) is 4 units, not 5.
At home: Play a simple battleship game on graph paper: take turns calling ordered pairs, and plot each call before checking for a hit.
