Say the first number, then each number that comes just before it: 20, 19, 18. On a number line, each hop back lands one lower.
Watch for: Counting up after the first number: 17, 18, 19. Getting stuck going from 20 to 19, or from 11 to 10. Counting the starting dot as the first hop on the number line.
At home: Count down before a race or before lunch: from 10, then from 15 or 20. Let your child pick the starting number.
