Check that the parts are the same size first. Two equal parts are halves; four equal parts are fourths, or quarters. More parts means each part is smaller.
Watch for: Calling a shape cut into unequal parts halves. Shading more than one part. Thinking a fourth is bigger than a half because 4 is bigger than 2.
At home: Cut toast or a tortilla into halves, then fourths. Ask which piece is bigger and how many fourths make a half.
