Check the parts are the same size, then count them: 2 parts are halves, 3 are thirds, 4 are fourths. Equal shares of the same whole can have different shapes.

Watch for: Calling unequal parts thirds or fourths. Naming the shares by how many are shaded instead of how many parts there are. Thinking fourths cut different ways can't be the same size.
At home: Cut a sandwich, a pancake or a piece of paper into halves, thirds or fourths, and check the parts are fair.
