Count the equal parts in the whole for the bottom number, then the shaded parts for the top. 2/4 is 2 parts of size 1/4.
Watch for: Putting the unshaded parts on top. Counting parts that aren't equal. Writing the total number of parts on top.
At home: Cut a sandwich into equal parts and name them: you ate 3 of the 8 pieces, so that's 3/8.
