Imagine folding along the line. If the two halves land exactly on each other, it's a line of symmetry. Try across, up and down, and along each diagonal.
line of symmetrya fold line where both halves match
symmetrichas at least one line of symmetry
mirror imagethe same shape, flipped
diagonala slanting line from corner to corner
Watch for: Giving a parallelogram a line of symmetry: its halves don't match when folded. Checking only across and up-and-down, and missing diagonal lines. Drawing a line that splits a shape in half but doesn't fold it onto itself.
At home: Cut shapes from paper and fold them to test lines of symmetry. Letters work too: A has one, H has two, and F has none.
