Split the words at “thousand”. Write the part before it, then a comma, then the part after it as three digits. Put a 0 in any place the words skip.

Watch for: Leaving out a zero: two hundred sixty-seven thousand twenty-four is 267,024, not 26,724. Putting the comma in the wrong place. Comparing first digits without checking both numbers have the same number of places.
At home: Read big numbers aloud together, like a town's population or the miles on a car. Then say one aloud and have your child write it.
