Moving a digit one place left makes it worth ten times as much, so 200 = 10 × 20. To find what a digit is worth, name its place and write zeros for the places after it.

Watch for: One zero too many: 10 × 20 = 2,000. Giving the digit (2) instead of what it's worth (20,000). Counting places from the left instead of from the ones place.
At home: With play money, show that ten $1 bills trade for one $10, and ten $10 bills for one $100. Each step to the left is worth ten of the one before.
