Put one X above the matching mark for each measurement. For the total, multiply each value by its number of Xs and add. To share it equally, divide the total by how many.
Watch for: Counting the Xs when the question asks for the total amount. Adding the bottoms too: ⅜ + ⅜ is 6/8, not 6/16. Putting an X on the wrong mark, like ⅜ on the ¾ mark.
At home: Measure a few pencils or crayons to the nearest eighth of an inch and make a line plot. How long would they be laid end to end?
