Count the cubes in the bottom layer, like 3 rows of 2 = 6. Count the layers going up. Multiply: 6 × 4 layers = 24 cubic units.
Watch for: Counting only the cubes on the front face. Adding the layers instead of multiplying. Missing the row at the back when counting the bottom layer.
At home: Stack sugar cubes or dice into a box shape one layer at a time. Ask how many are in a layer and how many layers, before counting them all.
