One ten frame is full, so start at 10 and count on the extra dots: 11, 12, 13. The number is ten and that many ones: 10 + 3 = 13.
Watch for: Counting the full frame one by one and losing track. Writing 13 as 31, since the word “thirteen” says the 3 first. Writing 10 + 7 as 107 instead of 17.
At home: Bundle 10 straws or craft sticks with a rubber band. Show the bundle and 4 loose ones: that's 14.
