Count the rods by tens (10, 20, 30…), then count on the cubes by ones. The tens count goes in the tens place and the cubes in the ones place.

Watch for: Counting each rod as 1 instead of 10. Swapping the digits: 3 tens and 5 ones written as 53. Writing 40 as 4 when there are no ones.
At home: Make tens with paper clips linked in chains of 10. Build a number like 34 and let your child read it back.
