Line the object up with 0. Count the whole inches, then the small spaces after the last whole inch: each is a quarter, and two quarters make a half.
Watch for: Starting from the end of the ruler instead of 0. Counting the marks instead of the spaces between them. Writing 3.3 for three and three quarters.
At home: Measure small things together, like a crayon or a spoon, to the nearest quarter inch.
