Dividing by two digits

How to help

Estimate how many times the divisor fits, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit and repeat. Check: quotient × divisor + remainder = the number you divided.

Watch for: A remainder as big as the divisor or bigger: the estimate was too small. Skipping a 0 in the quotient when the divisor doesn't fit after bringing down a digit. Keeping an estimate that's too big, so the product is more than what it's taken from.

At home: Share a big pile of dried beans into cups of 12 and count what's left. Then check: cups × 12, plus the leftovers, should make the whole pile.
