Multiply the top number by the ones digit. Then write a 0 in the ones place and multiply by the tens digit. Add the two rows. A rounded estimate checks the answer.
Watch for: Forgetting the 0 at the start of the second row, so that row is ten times too small. Adding a carried digit before multiplying instead of after. Leaving old carried digits in place so they get added into the second row.
At home: Before your child multiplies, ask for a rough answer: 67 × 68 is about 70 × 70, or 4,900. Then check the real answer lands near it.
