How to help

Count the pictures one at a time, touching each one. The last number you say is how many: write that number.

• numbera written sign for how many, like 7
• countsay one number for each thing
• how manythe total you get when you count
• zero0, or none at all

Watch for: Writing a number backwards, like a flipped 3, 7 or 9. Swapping the digits of a teen number: 71 for 17. Counting a picture twice, so the number is one too many.

At home: Write numbers big in the air, in sand or on a steamy window. Then ask your child to count out that many spoons or socks.
