Say the answer, then write it. If it doesn't come quickly, show it on fingers and count. Adding or taking away 0 leaves the number the same.
Watch for: Adding when the sign says take away: 4 − 3 = 7. Answering 0 when a 0 is added or taken away: 3 + 0 = 0. Being one off by counting the first number again when counting on.
At home: Use one hand: show 5 fingers, fold 2 down, and ask how many are up. Keep it quick and playful, a few facts at a time.
