To add, count all the pictures in both groups. To take away, count only the ones not crossed out. Fingers or small toys can help too.
Watch for: Counting the crossed-out ones as if they were still there. Counting only one group when adding. Counting the last picture of the first group again when starting the second.
At home: Act it out with toys: 3 cars in the garage and 2 more drive in. How many now? Then drive 1 away.
