A ten frame has 10 spaces. Count the empty spaces to find how many more make 10. Check by counting them all: it should reach 10.
Watch for: Writing the number of filled spaces instead of the empty ones. Being one off, like 3 and 6 instead of 3 and 7. Drawing too many dots, so the frame goes past 10.
At home: Hold up some fingers and ask how many more make 10. Pairs like 6 and 4 are worth knowing by heart.
