Breaking apart numbers

How to help

Start with the whole number of fingers, dots or small objects. Take away the part you know and count what's left: that's the missing part.

Watch for: Writing the whole number again in the missing box. Not seeing that 0 can be a part: 6 = 6 + 0. Adding the two numbers shown: reading 7 = 5 + ? as 7 + 5.

At home: Hide some of 7 pennies under a cup. Your child counts the ones left outside and works out how many are hiding.
