How to help

Say what each digit is worth: in 421 the 4 is 400, the 2 is 20 and the 1 is 1. Write those as a sum. To go back, put each value in its place.

Watch for: Writing 900 + 5 as 95, dropping the zero in the tens. Writing 4 + 2 + 1 instead of 400 + 20 + 1. Writing “four hundred fifty-three” as 40053.

At home: Read house numbers, prices or page numbers aloud together, then ask what each digit is worth.
