Follow the dashed lines to find each small shape, and count them. For the whole shape, count only the sides around the outside.
Watch for: Counting the dashed lines instead of the shapes they make. Counting dashed lines as sides of the big shape. Naming the big shape after one of its pieces.
At home: Cut a paper square from corner to corner to make two triangles. Put them back together, then try making other shapes with them.
