Put a finger on one side and count each straight side as you go around, stopping where you started. A small mark on the first side helps.
Watch for: Counting the first side again when going around. Thinking a tilted shape has a different number of sides. Forgetting the hidden faces of a cube: it has 6, not 3.
At home: Count sides and corners on things at home: a cracker, a book, a slice of toast. Count the faces of a cereal box together.
