Fact families: three numbers that give two adding facts and two taking-away facts. This shows that subtraction is finding a missing part.

The biggest number is the whole; the other two are its parts. Part + part = whole, either way round. Whole − one part = the other part.
Watch for: Starting a subtraction with a part: 3 − 13 instead of 13 − 3. Bringing in a number that isn't one of the three. Writing the same fact twice instead of both turn-arounds.
At home: Put 10 spoons down and hide some under a towel. Say how many you see; your child tells how many are hiding and says the take-away fact.
