Work out each side on its own. If both sides make the same number, the sentence is true. If not, it is false.

Watch for: Thinking = means “the answer comes next,” so 8 + 5 = 8 + 5 looks wrong. Working out only the left side and ignoring the right. Calling 3 + 4 = 4 + 3 false because the numbers are in a different order.
At home: Make both sides with blocks: 4 + 3 on one plate, 5 + 2 on the other. Are they equal? Try a pair that isn't.
