Start on the first number, not on 0. Hop once for each one you add or take away, then read the number you land on. To add, starting from the bigger number is quicker.
Watch for: Counting the starting number as the first hop, so the answer is 1 off. Hopping forward on a take-away. Counting on from the small number: 1 + 11 is quicker as 11 + 1.
At home: Chalk a number line from 0 to 20 on the sidewalk. Call out 12 + 3 or 15 − 2 and let your child hop it.
