Split the number you take away. Take enough to land on 10, then take the rest: 12 − 4 = 12 − 2 − 2 = 8. Check by adding: 8 + 4 = 12.

Watch for: Taking away all of the number in the first step and again in the second. Stopping at 10 and forgetting the rest: 12 − 4 = 10. Counting back and including the starting number as the first count.
At home: Count 13 coins, then take away 5 in two steps: first 3 to make 10, then 2 more. Ask how many are left each time.
